Child care is available for infants and toddlers, but children are welcome to join in our worship!
Whether you're just visiting or looking for a church to call home, our Sunday worship services offer you the opportunity to build your faith in God and worship Him.
We gather together twice every Sunday and would love to have you join us!
1. SPEND TIME GETTING TO KNOW WHO WE ARE
The best way to get to know who we are is to come to the public worship services where you can hear the preaching of the gospel, join in with the prayers and singing, and meet the members who would be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you would like to learn more about the Canadian Reformed churches in general, check out the website: www.canrc.org
2. LET US KNOW THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED
If you are interested in becoming a member of the Immanuel Canadian Reformed church, or would like some further instruction in the Reformed faith before you make a decision, please come to a worship service and let an usher or greeter know. They will help you get into contact with the pastor or one of the elders so that arrangements can be made.
3. LET US HELP YOU DEMONSTRATE YOUR FAITH
Before receiving a person as a member of Christ’s church the pastors are called by God to ensure that you have godly motives to seek membership in the church, know the Scriptures, rejoice in the gospel, flee from your sins, and seek to live according to the will of God. In addition to observing your regular attendance at the worship services and other activities of the church which demonstrate your commitment to being a living member of the congregation, ordinarily two of the elders will meet with you to talk about your Christian faith and to discuss options for further instruction in the Scriptures and the confession and life of believers, before announcing your intentions to the congregation.
4. LET US HEAR YOU PUBLICLY PROFESS YOUR FAITH
After you have demonstrated your commitment to becoming a living member of the congregation and received the recommended instruction, you will be given an opportunity to share your Christian testimony with the spiritual leaders of the church and to make arrangements for baptism (if necessary) and/or a public declaration of faith before the LORD in a public worship service. 5. LET US WORSHIP GOD BESIDE ONE ANOTHER
The Holy Spirit’s work in the hearts of all believers is evident in their desire to hear their Good Shepherd Jesus Christ speak through the Scriptures in the public worship services, to respond to his voice with thankful songs, prayers, offerings, and participation in the sacraments, and to seek to love and serve your brothers and sisters in the family of God under the spiritual leadership of the elders and deacons.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a typical worship service look like?
ur services are usually 1-1.5 hours long.
We sit in pews and sing along to piano or organ accompaniment. The lyrics are displayed on the screen in the front of the church.
There is an elder or pastor who will lead the service and deliver a 20-30 minute sermon about the gospel.
After the service is over we gather in the foyer for conversation and fellowship.
What books do you use during worship services?
We use the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible.
The songs that we sing come from the Book of Praise: Anglo Genevan Psalter which has all 150 Biblical psalms put to music as well as 85 hymns.
Both Bibles and Psalm Books are provided in the pews.
What Creeds and Confessions are used?
The main teachings of the Bible have been summarized in documents called creeds or confessions. We have chosen to adopt three creeds and three confessions as our own.
The creeds come to us from the early church, namely the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. The confessions have come to us from the Reformation of the sixteenth century, namely, the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dort.
We consider these creeds to be faithful summaries of the Word of God.
What time should I arrive?
The parking lot and pews can fill up quickly so we recommend arriving 15-25 minutes early.
What Do My Kids Do?
Our church has nursery facilities for babies and toddlers for both our morning and afternoon services.
Children beyond their toddler years are encouraged to join their family, and the rest of the worshippers, in the worship service.
What do I wear?
While we don’t have a dress code, we encourage worshippers to dress neatly as they are in the presence of God.
Most people in our worship services are dressed from semi-formal to formal (suits, dresses).
What are the sacraments?
The sacraments are baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are administered in the worship services.
As soon as it is feasible, parents request to have their newborn child baptized in the assembly of God’s people.
As for the Lord’s Supper, it is celebrated every two months.
Can I partake in the Lord's Supper?
Before we invite you to participate in the Lord's Supper with us, the elders would like to meet with you in order to get to know your situation a little better.
Can I join a Bible Study?
Yes, our church offers a variety of Bible Studies and programs offered to anyone, even if you're not a member of our church. If you'd like more information on joining, please email homemission@edmontonimmanuel.ca
How do I become a member?
You can become a member of the Canadian Reformed Churches by following the steps outlined in the Pathway to Membership found in this book and on our website. We recommend regularly attending worship services for a while and getting to know the church and what we believe. This helps both you and the church community understand one another and discern your interest in membership.
Canadian Reformed Churches are confessional and rooted in the historic Reformed faith, affirming the truth and authority of Scripture, as summarized in the Three Forms of Unity (Belgic Confession, Heidelberg Catechism, Canons of Dort) and the authority of Scripture. You’ll need to understand these teachings before becoming a member.
We offer membership or catechism classes to help you learn the basics of Reformed doctrine and the church’s beliefs/practices.
If you have not yet made a public Profession of Faith, you would typically prepare for this — often through instruction with the pastor or elders — and then make that profession before the congregation. Once you’ve professed your faith, the congregation will welcome you as a member, and you will get to participate fully in the life of the church — including the Lord’s Supper.
Can my children attend Parkland Immanuel Christian School?
Parkland Immanuel Christian School was established by members of the Canadian Reformed Churches in Edmonton who formed the Canadian Reformed School Society of Edmonton. The Society is committed to the infallible Word of God and bound by the Three Forms of Unity as confessed in the Canadian Reformed Church. Children of members of the Canadian Reformed Church and United Reformed Church will be admitted as students. Children of parents (or guardians) who are not members of the Canadian Reformed Church or the United Reformed Church may be admitted at the discretion of the School Board only after the parents have been interviewed by the Board. The parents must agree to abide by the Society’s constitution and by-laws.
How do I find out about upcoming events and special services?
