Our Foundation
We are a "reformed" church. That means that we go back to the original form that the Lord God has given us in His Word. As such we strive to be biblical, and desire to submit ourselves to the authority of God's Word alone. We are delighted that God has revealed Himself to us, and that He wants to be in a covenant relationship with all those who humble themselves before Him and trust in Him.
Immanuel Canadian Reformed Church is built on the foundation of the Bible, the inspired and infallible Word of God. Through the Bible and the Holy Spirit, God works repentance and faith in the hearts of his children. Our spiritual roots are in the Reformation, when God used men like Martin Luther and John Calvin to bring the church back to his Word.
We are delighted that God has revealed Himself to us, and that He wants to be in a covenant relationship with all those who humble themselves before Him and trust in Him.
Confessions
The Reformed Churches have summarized the teachings of the Bible in various confessions. These confessions don't replace the Bible, but are an aid in understanding the Bible. These confessions can be divided into two groups:
Ecumenical confessions
The Ecumenical Confessions were all written during the first 6 centuries A.D. They include:
- The Apostles' Creed
- The Athanasian Creed
- The Nicene Creed
Reformed confessions
The Reformed Confessions include:
- The Belgic Confession: states in a positive way what we believe about God; man and his fall into sin; Jesus Christ and Salvation; the Church and Sacraments; civil government
- The Heidelberg Catechism: uses a question and answer format to explain the basics of the Christian faith
- The Canons of Dort: stresses the sovereignty of God in our salvation, emphasizing it is all God's work; clearly teaches the fine points of the Reformed faith
At peace with God
The Christian faith is a joyful faith, because you know that through Jesus Christ you are at peace with God. When you believe in Jesus Christ then God is not angry with you, but you fall under His protection, love and grace. But God's Word is clear: "...there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12). And, "For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life...He who believes in Him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." (John 3: 16,18)
